One thing I know is shadows are a photographers worst enemy. Well I suppose along with dead batteries and full up memory cards.
Always visit the wedding location as close to the date and at the exact time you will be taking the shots. Then you will have a good idea of what direction the sun will be when you come to take the important photographs.

If the shadow is over the subjects face use a fill flash
Using the fill flash point your meter at the mid-range colour, usually greys
If you are over 3 metres away angle your flash directly at the subject
Under 3 metres tilt your tilt your flash away
